Various Types of Yoga Found at UP

YOGA CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Our classes welcome everyone, regardless of fitness level, or yoga experience.  Your teacher will help you to take your practice where you’d like to go.  Please talk with us if you have any questions, or physical limitations, and we will recommend a class for you.  Please remember, it’s YOUR practice — your best teacher resides within you.  We ask you to listen to your body and adjust your practice to fit your needs. 

 


 

Vinyasa Level I 

Level 1 is a slower-paced vinyasa flow class for those new to yoga or for those who prefer a gentler class. Sun salutations and other asanas primary to the vinyasa practice are broken down. Props and modifications are offered for proper alignment and ease in the postures.

Power Flow

A fast-paced vinyasa class where you will link movement and breath. Power yoga will help you to build internal heat, increase stamina, flexibility and strength. You will leave feeling invigorated yet relaxed.

Gentle Yoga + Nidra

Bliss out in this all levels offering perfect for Sunday evening as you prepare for the week ahead. You will move through a gentle hatha yoga experience followed by a guided iRest Yoga Nidra practice.  iRest Yoga nidra is a restorative, meditative, sleep like yoga bringing you into a state of deep rest and relaxation.  

Core Strength

As the title suggests, this class is designed to bring strength and organization to the physical and emotional core of the body. The class is a mix of posture strengthening asana and kriya, fire building pranayama and cleansing mudra. Yes it is work – but it beats grinding out crunches at the gym and has profound benefit on the body-mind over a consistent period.

Musings, Meditation and Movement

This is a relaxed beginner friendly (all levels are welcome of course) class that combines philosophical meditations and a gentle yoga postural sequence to help you stretch and strengthen body and soul. The weekly meditations weave the yogic yamas and niyamas in each class but regular attendance is absolutely not compulsory. Come to a class if you’re curious about yoga or even to discover what the title means!

Class is held at room temperature and no fragrance is diffused without class approval.

Midday Movement

Come flow with us during your lunch break. Rather than sitting and eating at your desk, take the time to connect with your body, your breath and with others in this all levels vinyasa class. Go back to work with an improved mood and focus.

Yoga Fundamentals

Yoga Fundamentals is a class for students new to yoga or who would like to go back to basics. Each week, students will be introduced to new yoga poses, learn safe alignment and be taught how to link breath and movement. Students who regularly attend Yoga Fundamentals will gradually be able to take level 1.5 classes.

Vinyasa UP

This class embodies what inspired the creation of UP; challenging yourself,  bettering yourself, getting yourself healthy and reaching new heights within a supportive community. Vinyasa UP is a challenging vinyasa class where you will learn the principles of and prepare for arm balances and inversions. With a focus on upper body strength, this class will teach you to set a strong foundation through the hands and feet, help you feel safe trying poses you may not have felt comfortable attempting, but have always wanted to try.

All Levels Vinyasa Flow

Vinyasa Yoga connects breath and movement through sequences that may change from class to class. Vinyasa is a creative practice where you may be introduced to yoga philosophy, various pranayama (breathing) techniques, movement and stillness all meant to inspire personal growth and transformation. An all levels class provides modifications for beginners.

Restoratives for Anxiety

Restoratives for Anxiety works to bring regulation and coherence to the entire bodymind using the combined practices of trauma renegotiation through somatic experiencing, integrating wholeness through nondual healing and awareness and stimulation/regulation of the nervous system through Yoga asana, pranayama and mudra. This restorative sequenced class builds stability and transforms at the essential level so, that through contiguous practice, the anxious states of consciousness that trouble us as humans release their grip, reveal our more fearless and grounded nature and over time become a source of creative power and inspiration.

  Vinyasa Level I/II 

Enjoy this beginning to intermediate level class, which builds on yoga basics offering you the opportunity for deepening your practice. You will be encouraged to develop a well rounded practice with asana and pranayama connecting you more deeply with your body. In this class you will gently be introduced to Level II concepts while still having the option of Level I variations and modifications allowing you to grow at your own pace.

All Levels Ashtanga 

A powerful and dynamic style of yoga developed by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, in which set series of postures (The Primary Series) are linked dynamically to the breath in a flow of movement increasing strength and flexibility. When the set sequence of postures becomes familiar, the mind relaxes and the practice can become deep and meditative, yet still dynamic. This class is open to all levels from beginners with no previous experience of Astanga yoga, through to Intermediates and Advanced.

Metal Yoga

Join us on this journey deep into darkness where participants will stoke their inner fires to build heat and strength through a vinyasa-style class accompanied by the heaviest soundtrack you’ve ever heard in a yoga studio. As the flames of hell creep through your muscles and melt away your anxiety and resistance, remember the words of Iron Maiden: “I shall return from out of the fire.” This class is open to practitioners of all skill levels—no leather pants or spiked wristbands required.

Flow + Let Go

This class combines dynamic sequences to cultivate strength, balance, flexibility and body awareness, and cools down with restorative poses so that every student leaves feeling recharged. An all levels approach provides room for creative expression and is accessible for every body.

Yin Yang Yoga

Enjoy an all levels class of Yin Yang Yoga which offers a balanced practice of yin and yang styles of yoga. The yin style of long-held passive poses and static stretches opens the body to more flexibility while embracing a more contemplative, non-reactive quality of mind. A more active, dynamic, yang style of vinyasa will follow, strengthening and invigorating the body and mind.

Finding Your Edge

Start your Saturday with an all levels class designed to entice you out beyond your comfort zone. In Finding Your Edge we will work with poses that are often avoided or relegated to the ’when I get better at Yoga’ list. At a steady pace we will warm, open and encourage our bodymind and spirit to venture into those edgy places that eventually result in our fullest expression of asana such as Hanuman, Eka Pada Raj Kapot and Svarga Dvid. Whether you understand the Sanskrit names or even consider yourself capable of ‘such flexibility’, this class will lead you right to your personal edge and reveal what you are truly capable of. Come and be surprised!

Breath and Beats

Breath and Beats is specifically tailored to those wanting to have fun during yoga with an upbeat music playlist to energize them throughout their practice. Students should expect a class rooted in power and vinyasa yoga, linking each movement with breath intentionally. Expect to leave feeling energized and empowered to start the night off right!

Friday Night Yin

UP yoga invites you to a Friday Night Yin Experience-just the thing to wipe the slate clean for the weekend! Come focus on Yin energies to balance out from the swirling demands of the work week and whatever else the universe is burdening you with. Yin is a practice of inward focus, surrender, and acceptance. We will focus on using the pose to get into the body as we release muscular effort and sink into the shapes of the Yin asanas. Designed to build inner energetic reserves, dissipate energetic blockages, thereby enhancing mobility/flexibility, Yin shapes are held longer in order to traction the body, lengthening fascia and connective tissue (as opposed to stretching muscles). We will work to find appropriate edges for a sustainable practice. Yin is simple, not necessarily easy. All levels welcome for this cooling, purging practice.
